Design Project

A final design project culminates the activity, knowledge, and skills gleaned from the programme. Its concept stems from my interest in employee performance and eLearning. It describes an instructional programme conceptualised from a performance problem faced by several Ministries and Departments in a Public Sector entity, and supported by the results of a Needs Analysis performed by the entity's Government Training Department.

The programme is entitled "Advanced Communication Skills for Public Service Supervisors and Managers." It seeks to build their capacity for managing and performing face-to-face interactions with staff, peers, managers, clients, and the general public.
The new or refined skills will be useful as supervisors and managers attend and participate in meetings, engage in customer service relations, conduct employee performance appraisals, prepare for difficult conversations, or discipline, advise, and correct subordinates.

Skills to be gleaned from the programme include social negotiation; assertiveness; effective listening skills; effective use of verbal and non-verbal cues, tone, and language; and problem-solving.

The knowledge to be derived is an increased awareness of the supervisory role of team-leader, motivator, advisor, communicator, collaborator, and guide; as well as understanding of basic transactional communication in the workplace for communicating effectively with others; understanding and improving personal behavioural practices; assessing current communication situations; breaking or reducing personal barriers to communication; and building positive interpersonal work teams.
